Christmas Eve

‘Tis the night before Christmas and all through the house
Every creature is stirring, run, hide, little mouse!
The stockings were packed in some box or trunk
Dad’s pulling his hair out, Mom’s in a funk

The children are tearing about with shrieks
Sugared up to their eyeballs has made them freaks
Wrapping paper is piled from ceiling to floor
And the parents are wondering what Christmas is for

They’ve been running about spending all their money
Calling each other names none of them “Honey,”
Stressed, exhausted, and fighting the crowd,
WHAT IS CHRISTMAS FOR?!” Dad wonders aloud –

“I spend every dime for stuff we don’t need
All the while frustration is what we breed
Do we really have to buy all these THINGS?
Is this the Peace, Love, and Joy the season brings?”

Mom, hearing Dad with his well-founded thought
Said, “Let us returned some of this ‘stuff’ we bought
And instead, let’s go for a nice long walk
Put down our phones and to each other talk!

“Because you’re right with what you propose
The Spirit of Christmas is like a rose
Each petal contains the Secrets of Life
Let’s shut off the noise and cut out the strife

“I’m happy to give a small gift or two
But the best we have, Sweetheart, is me and you,
Let’s return to the Spirit of Christmas TODAY
To heck with what the Joneses might say!

“We’ll create fond memories we’ll always treasure
The true gift of a lifetime, beyond all measure
When remembering that what Christmas is for
Is to Love and to Cherish each other evermore!
Not the Joneses, as told to Blythe Ayne
